Getting Started

To get ready to file a bankruptcy you need to:

  1. call us to talk about it,
  2. get a credit counseling certificate (see providers below),
  3. gather up your pay stubs and financial documents, and
  4. make an appointment to see us.

Everyone who files a bankruptcy must get a credit counseling certificate first. There are almost no exceptions. You do not have to pay your bills in a debt repayment plan through a credit counselor. What you have to do is attend a one-time meeting to discuss your financial problems and get information about your options, then you are given a certificate. You can do this in person, over the telephone, by mail or over the Internet.

Here are three approved creditor counselors we recommend:

Hummingbird Credit Counseling and Education on the Internet, $49 (paid through our office)

Housing and Credit Counseling, Inc., in Topeka, Lawrence and Manhattan, $35 or $45

Consumer Credit Counseling Service, Inc., in Salina and Wichita, $50
