Choosing Your Bankruptcy Attorney

We are a husband-and-wife law firm that specializes in representing people like you in consumer bankruptcy cases. We handle every case personally. You are not just another file to us. You can be confident that you will not be handed off to a secretary, paralegal or rookie lawyer.

We listen to you and we answer your questions. We take the time to explain the bankruptcy process in plain terms. You are our top priority. We are here to help you and work to make a trying time more comfortable for you. You will be treated with kindness and respect. We truly care.

We do not expect you to fill out pages and pages of worksheets, only to have your answers typed up by a secretary. We will personally interview you and fill out all the bankruptcy paperwork for you with your assistance. We will be familiar with all aspects of your financial life and will guide you through the entire bankruptcy process. We will accompany you to your hearing – you will not have to suffer the anxiety of meeting a stranger at the hearing room or the embarrassment of having your name called out by attorney you have never met.

Bankruptcy can be a new beginning, a way to end your bill problems and rebuild your life. We are here to help you get your fresh start!

Mark Neis and Jill Michaux are licensed to practice law in all courts in the State of Kansas, the United States Supreme Court, the United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit, the Bankruptcy Appellate Panel, and the United States District Court and the Bankruptcy Courts in the State of Kansas.

We are board certified consumer bankruptcy specialists. Our certification was granted by the American Board of Certification, which is an American Bar Association accredited organization. We were the first certified consumer bankruptcy specialists in Kansas and two of ten in Kansas today. We are the only attorneys in Topeka entitled to say we are consumer bankruptcy specialists. We recertify with the American Board of Certification every five years.

We are founding members of the National Association of Consumer Bankruptcy Attorneys, the Topeka Area Bankruptcy Council and the Kansas Bar Association Bankruptcy and Insolvency Section. Jill Michaux served on the NACBA board of directors for that organization’s first seven years. She is past president of the KBA Bankruptcy Section. Both Mark Neis and Jill Michaux have been president of the Topeka Area Bankruptcy Council.

Mark Neis has a bachelor of business administration degree from Washburn University. He is a 1978 graduate of Washburn University Law School. Jill Michaux received a bachelor of science in journalism degree in 1973 from the University of Kansas. She graduated from Washburn University Law School with dean’s honors in 1982. Both attorneys had solo law practices before merging them to form Neis & Michaux, P.A., in July 1984.

We have proudly represented thousands of consumer and small-business debtors in bankruptcy. We have a combined total of 70 years experience as of 2015.

Our legal system allows you to represent yourself but it is unwise to do so. Recall the proverb: “he who is his own lawyer has a fool for a client.” Read this do-it-yourself bankruptcy horror story. A Kansas woman can never discharge her debts because of mistakes she made in representing herself in a series of bankruptcy filings.
