The Topeka Bankruptcy Court is located in the Carlson Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse at 444 SE Quincy, Topeka, Kansas. The bankruptcy courtrooms are located in Rooms 210 and 220 in the southwest corner of the second floor. The clerk’s office is east of the courtrooms in Room 240.
Most debtors do not attend court proceedings. They generally only attend a 341 meeting of creditors in room 303 of the downtown U.S. Post Office, 434 S. Kansas Avenue, Topeka, Kansas.
Court hearings and trials are required when disputes exist that require a ruling by the Bankruptcy Judge Janice Miller Karlin or Judge Dale L. Somers. Fortunately for debtors, most disputes are resolved by negotiation between the attorneys and trials are rare.
If you are required to attend a court hearing, please know that you must present photo identification to the security guards monitoring the entrances. You will be required to go through metal detectors much like at an airport. You are not allowed to bring a cell phone or other electronic device into the building and you will be required to take it back to your car.
There is no parking at the federal building. We recommend that you park in the Townsite Parking garage. The entrance is on 5th Street between Kansas Avenue and Quincy Street. The parking fee is $1.00 per hour.
